The Northern Virginia Chapter of the Commercial Real Estate Development Association (NAIOP) recently awarded IA and the project team the Award of Merit for a confidential financial client’s workplace expansion.
A global financial firm’s recent extension of its headquarters for its growing corporate retail and technology groups recently received the Award of Merit from the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Commercial Real Estate Development Association (NAIOP). Design elements from the main campus settings provide continuity of experience and wayfinding while simultaneously lending a unique identity.
“IA’s design for the award winning workplace in Northern Virginia integrated the physical aspects of the clients culture while introducing unique features within the space that add energy and excitement for the associates who work within the space,” says Richard Bergey, senior project manager at JLL. “The design provides different settings across the floor(s) to accommodate needs for collaboration, meet-up, quiet zones and community.”
To provide respite from the deep focus work required of both the technology and finance groups, and to reduce travel time between locations, the new space provides maximum amenities. Food service, coffee bar, and a “power-up” internal retail center for IT support and technology replacement/upgrades are all grouped on a single floor. For this client’s culture, centralized amenities provide a common destination for all groups, and encourage collaboration, physical movement, and a sense of community.
Workspaces are designed for operational flexibility within distinct neighborhoods that can change in size as needed. Alternating active and quiet zones ring the perimeter and a variety of spaces offer choices to support the workflow and workstyle typical of each group. Most floors offer 95 percent open work stations, private phone booths, enclosed offices, a pantry or micro kitchen, libraries, huddle and conference rooms, demountable wall surfaces, and a video/studio room. The free-standing phone booths, prefabricated and installed as furniture pieces, replace traditional build-out solutions and provide flexibility—both in number and location—with superior acoustical privacy.
Diverse workstyles are met with a variety of furniture settings, height-adjustable desks, and lounge and teaming areas. Writeable walls enhance workflow and teaming processes. Continuity of process is key for this financial-technology firm where both fields seamlessly merge through team agility, rapid collocation, and varying workstyles.
Materiality is applied as a wayfinding strategy. Distinct materials, including wood plank, wood block, stacked stone, and pebbles, offer intuitive clues to each floor as well as zone location and function. The materials in each elevator lobby and cafe space, along with color themes incorporated into workstation glass fins, are components of the overall wayfinding strategy.
