IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl Durst discusses the association’s mission and advocacy and what the profession of interior design may look like in the future.
The International Interior Design Association (IIDA), the professional advocacy group for the interior design profession, has 15,000 members practicing design in 56 countries. The association also has nearly 40 chapters across the globe.
Design is more than a transactional relationship; it’s a necessity in life and it’s about humans and human behaviors. Clients walk away with beautiful interiors, but they also walk away with more knowledge about themselves as an organization, their brand, and their culture.
Future practitioners of design should be aware of the world around them and should be multidisciplinary in outlook and practice to be successful.
In the future, the scope of work for design professionals will expand. Instead of helping clients solve a design problem, design professionals will be helping clients become better brand champions and build stronger cultures and communities.
