The award honors Mourning’s career and contributions to the design industry.
On September 21, 2016, IIDA’s Northern California Chapter honored IA Founder and CEO David Mourning, AIA, FIIDA with its Leadership of Excellence Award. The award recognizes an IIDA member for exemplary leadership within the profession of Interior Design and was presented at the chapter’s annual Leaders Breakfast at the San Francisco Four Season’s Hotel. Previous winners include Stanford Hughes, Laura Guido-Clark, and M. Arthur Gensler.
In 1984, Mourning started IA Interior Architects, the first global architecture firm solely focused on corporate interior architecture and design, effectively declaring that practice a standalone discipline as opposed to a secondary offering of architecture and engineering firms. Trained as an architect, Mourning’s love of interior design and expertise in design, management, and marketing, along with his efforts in pioneering the master service agreement, directed the firm’s rapid growth to nineteen offices in the U.S., London, and Canada, as well as the IA global alliance with partner affiliates worldwide.
It’s been said that the joy is in the journey not the destination, and Mourning noted that for him the journey has been a tremendous joy with great fulfillment. Accepting the award on behalf of all the professionals at IA, past and present, who have built IA into the firm it is today he said, “The joy has been in starting a firm that is not named after its founder but after who we are and what we are, interior architects, where professionals can build a client following and a practice within a practice or even build an office and at the same time be part of something bigger.”
