Wellness at IA: Supporting Health in Boston

Group activities with colleagues, from the gym to the yoga studio, support a healthy lifestyle.

In IA’s Boston office, the team places heavy emphasis on group outings and activities to promote healthful living. From 5K teams to supportive spectatorship at the CrossFit games, our New England design team finds favor in supporting each other’s wellness goals to live healthy lifestyles.

“Not only does this buddy system support regular exercise and healthy eating, it promotes a healthy work/life balance. “Working out together helps us keep motivated to maintain healthy lifestyles,” says Sarah Brophy, IIDA, NCIDQ, LEED AP.

“We keep each other in check. It is much easier to step away from the computer and go to the yoga studio when your teammate is doing the same,” concurs Katelyn Cantelli, IIDA, NCIDQ, LEED AP ID+C. “We also try and stay on the heathy track together during the day with Paleo lunch and snack choices; having someone in the same boat is always helpful.”

“This has been a really fun opportunity to connect outside of work and build relationships across common interests,” says Matt Morong, an IA job captain in Boston. “It’s great motivation to get to the gym, and the health benefits are a huge bonus, too.”

Our office regularly joins team events. In 2013 and 2014, we ran the Devil’s Chase 10K and the Spartan Race in Fenway Park. Last year we ran on the RunKeeper team for the Freedom 5K, and are all using the Runkeeper App to track our running, walking, and cycling so we can see each other’s accomplishments outside of work. It’s also motivation to go on that run we may not have if we weren’t all encouraging one another.

“These events are great team building opportunities, especially those where we work together to overcome different obstacles. It’s outside our comfort zones but it  binds us in ways we can’t achieve inside the office.”

“Fitness has always been one of the most important aspects of my life.  I guess you could say I’m addicted! I do CrossFit six times a week, and make sure I eat to train at a high level.  This year, I participated in the Crossfit Open, which is an activity that all athletes who do Crossfit around the world participate in.  Personally, it has helped me keep in shape and it is also a great stress reliever.  Professionally, staying fit has helped me mentally focus at work and I also find it helps me be a better team player.
